The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports directly to the Managing Director of Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Inc and leads a team of 3 individuals. The CFO provides leadership and direction to financial and accounting management for Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Inc. This role is responsible for oversight of all accounting functions including budget, forecasting, internal controls, payroll, benefits, investment / treasury, cash flow, audit, box office reports, fundraising budgeting and reporting, and capital planning. The position reports to the Managing Director and along with the team provides internal cross functional customer service across internal groups.

Now in its 63rd Season, Milwaukee Repertory Theater is dedicated to providing the highest level of professional theater to Milwaukee and Wisconsin in addition to offering a wide range of education and community programs. Led by Artistic Director Mark Clements and Managing Director Chad Bauman, Milwaukee Rep produces an 11-play season that spans three performance venues, as well as A Christmas Carol, a beloved holiday tradition for over three decades, in the adjacent Pabst Theater. The Rep produces over 600 performances annually of new and contemporary work, classics, and musical theater pieces plus a short-play festival showcasing its emerging professional residents, which is one of the oldest and most respected Emerging Professional Residency programs in regional theater. Milwaukee Repertory Theater ignites positive change in the cultural, social, and economic vitality of its community by creating world-class theater experiences that entertain, provoke, and inspire meaningful dialogue among an audience representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity.


The CFO will be responsible for the following:

• Lead the financial management system of The Rep, assuring compliance with best practices through developing the annual budget; forecasting, monitoring, reporting, and analysis of financial performance and identifying and implementing actions to enhance financial performance.
• Lead and participate in capital planning with board and senior leadership team members.
• Lead financial management and oversight of business and relationship development, financial modeling, grant budget development, efficient billings, accurate reconciliations, timely financial reporting and preparation and participation in audits, financial statements and Form 990 preparation.
• Interact with and manage client relationships as a function of business development including all banking relationships. Manage company credit cards and merchant accounts.
• Effectively manage cash flow including managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, timely and cost-effective purchasing, and expense management. Manage short-term investments. Work with investment advisors to manage long-term investments.
• Oversee box office reporting and royalties
• Oversee and direct payroll preparation and reporting in alignment with established policies and procedures. This includes benefits administration including health insurance, retirement plans, ACA reporting and HSA, HRA, SEC 125, DCFSA, QTFBP documentation. Also responsible for liability and Workers Compensation Insurance.
• Develop and direct internal control systems throughout all aspects of operations to assure best practice internal controls and compliance.
• Management of fund development accounting including capital campaign reporting, restricted and unrestricted accounting practices, and grant reporting.
• Provide outstanding customer service to and work collaboratively and effectively with senior leadership to achieve cross functional and organization-wide goals including maintaining and enhancing the financial strength of the Rep, strategic planning, advocacy efforts, and attendance at the Rep events.
• Provide staff leadership to the Rep Finance and Investment Committees.
• Manage and mentor the Finance Department staff members
• Serve on Senior Staff and work with other Senior Staff members to provide support and collaboration where appropriate, required, and beneficial.
• Effective use of existing software including Abila MIP, Prophix, Tessitura, Microsoft Office, and File Maker Pro.


1. Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting or Finance.

2. Eight years of experience in a financial management leadership position within a performing arts or cultural organization preferred.

3. Financial management experience in non-profit budgeting, reporting, and grant management.

4. Strategic business strategy and planning experience. Prior experience as a member of a senior leadership team preferred.

5. Effective personnel management and communication experience.
