    The VP Philanthropy is responsible for developing and implementing strategies designed to encourage support of Blood Center Research Foundation (BCRF) and Versiti, as well as building higher visibility of the research mission of the organization.

    The VP Philanthropy is the leader of philanthropy and member of the Executive Leadership Team for Versiti and reports to the CEO.
    The VP Philanthropy works closely with the Board in seeking philanthropic support for research, education and training programs and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Versiti is national in scope and this position is based at headquarters in Milwaukee, WI.

    Responsibilities

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Develops a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
    • Responsibility for all operations of philanthropy and allocation of grants including strategy, goal setting, financial activities and management of staff.
    • Operational oversight of major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, corporate giving and grants development, philanthropic communications, data management, donor research, and stewardship and events.
    • Articulates a case for philanthropic support that communicates the rationale for private contributions to Versiti in terms that are understandable and compelling.
    • Understands and interprets the research and medical expertise for Versiti for volunteers and private contributors.
    • Supports and accompanies volunteer solicitors with reliable donor research, solicitation materials, coaching, and follow up.
    • Creates and implements strategic annual fundraising plans with benchmarks for measuring performance, ensuring that a process exists for the acquisition and continuous upgrading of donors.
    • Identifies Blood Center Research Foundation (BCRF) communication strategies and establishes BCRF public relations activities to expand awareness of research activities and discoveries.
    • Defines, recruits, trains, and manages staff capable of pursuing and sustaining a well-rounded fundraising effort.
    • Creates various programs to improve and enhance relationships among volunteers, blood donors, community leaders and civic organizations.

    GENERAL DUTIES
    • Represents the organization at designated internal and external meetings.
    • Participates in professional activities to keep current on industry trends and regulations.
    • Upholds the customer service standards and management philosophy of Versiti.
    • Refines and expands the information database for the management of donor and prospect records.
    • Supports all Board and committee meeting requirements as directed by the President and CEO.

    Qualifications

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
    • A visionary leader able to foster commitment to the shared mission and vision of Versiti.
    • Demonstrated ability to solicit and manage the development of innovative approaches to philanthropy.
    • Results-oriented with high level leadership skills to include planning, organizational, prioritization and relationship building skills.
    • Participative management style including strong team building skills, active listening skills, and the ability to direct, develop and motivate others to accomplish goals.
    • Strong donor/customer focus necessary to achieve organizational success.
    • Possesses the fundraising skills which will guarantee a high level of accomplishment.
    • Experience successfully managing all aspects of a well-rounded fundraising operations, including major gifts, annual funds, prospect research, grant writing, planned giving, gift acknowledgement, database management (Raiser’s Edge preferred), stewardship, special events, and donor recognition.
    • Proven fundraising track record in successful major gift solicitations with individuals, foundations, and corporations.
    • Ability to motivate and mentor volunteers through major gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
    • Ability to understand and articulate the scientific complexity inherent in the mission of the Blood Research Institute, Medical Sciences Institute and all of Versiti.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a demonstrated capacity to motivate and work alongside people at all levels of the organization while maintaining a focus that encompasses both a strategic vision and attention to organizational detail.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication including professional presentation skills.

    Professional Experience
    • 10+ years fundraising experience
    • 7+ years experience in progressively increasing levels of leadership
    • Experience in a medical research and/or health care environment preferred
